NYC based and Harlem raised, Charles Jones is an award-winning independent filmmaker with over 20 years of experience. A lifelong creative, Charles’ work in the arts has ranged from producing music to photography, which led him into cinematography. Early in his career, Charles produced and directed music videos, corporate videos and PSAs. He also freelanced as a camera operator and video editor.
In 2010, Charles produced and directed the critically acclaimed documentary feature “Autistic Like Me”. This film explores the complexity of how fathers respond to their child’s autism diagnosis and how that response further impacts the family dynamic. The film was embraced by academia for its research value and went on to screen at universities and film festivals across the U.S. In 2017 Charles was commissioned by Open Society Foundation (Campaign for Black Male Achievement) to direct the documentary short “I Am Somebody” which premiered at the Apollo Theater.
Charles’ foray into narrative filmmaking began in 2011 as an editor working with director Jerry LaMothe on the award winning short film “The Tombs”. In 2017 Charles stepped into his true passion for narrative storytelling by directing the short film “Perceptions” (2017) starring Melinda Williams, Alimi Ballard and Charles Malik Whitfield. He went on to direct the romantic comedy feature “Holiday Heartbreak” (BET Original 2020) starring Michael Colyar, AJ Johnson, and LisaRaye McCoy. This film garnered him a HAPAward nomination for Best Director of an Independent film. In 2024 he directed the feature film “The Deadly Getaway” (BET Original 2024) starring Jason Weaver, Yandy Smith-Harris, Jeff Logan, and Princess Love.
Charles’ work in film and TV goes far beyond directing; some of his highlights include serving as DP and editor of the award-winning short film “Ugly” which was a finalist in the 2016 ABFF HBO Short Film Competition and then licensed to HBO. He served as DP and editor of the feature film “All In” (BET 2019) which won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at ABFF 2019. He also produced and edited the feature film “Trophy Wife” (BET Original 2021) which starred Sean Patrick Thomas and Erica Peeples. In addition, he served as creative producer, editor and post supervisor for the feature film “First Lady of BMF: The Tonesa Welch Story” (BET Original 2023). Directed by Vivica A. Fox, this film was nominated for two NAACP Image Awards.
